| Art 7, 8, 9 ($25 Course Fee) The primary focus of the secondary art program focuses on three major components of visual learning: drawings, compositions, and encounters. Students will acquire the skills to work with various tools, techniques, and media to express how they feel, think, and react to the world around them and how to analyze and interpret art. Opportunities to design and create will be fostered through the modalities of drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpting. Technical aspects such as Elements of Art (color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value) and famous artist studies are incorporated throughout the course. Participation in art events initiated by the Fine Arts consultants of Edmonton Catholic Schools and supporting social justice projects are initiatives that may be explored. By the end of the year, each student’s visual journal and art portfolio will highlight their artistic and creative talents through distinguished final compositions. “Creativity takes courage” -Henri Matisse | Communication Technology 7, 8, 9 ($10 Course Fee) Do you love taking photographs? Then this class is for you! By learning about photo composition and the use of a DSLR (digital) camera, you can start MAKING photos! This class helps you delve into or further develop your artistic skills in photography. Various activities and assignments will challenge you to compose photographic works of art! With each year you take this class, you will have different opportunities to build upon your knowledge of photography skills and techniques. |
| Coding and Robotics 7, 8, 9 ($20 Course Fee) If you are interested in learning about technology this is the class for you! Learn to develop your basic coding skills to instruct different robots through various challenges of varying difficulty. Participate in these challenges to engage in hands-on learning opportunities that work towards real life coding experiences. You will also learn how basic coding can help you animate games with simple graphics, or even build a website from scratch. In addition to coding students will build on their communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. | Woodworking & Design 7, 8, 9 ($50 Course Fee) Students develop basic design, hand tool and production skills to safely transform common building materials into useful products. Students participate in hands-on learning experiences and work towards creating real-life products, presentations, or services. Students develop communication, collaboration, critical thinking, time management and problem-solving skills. Students build their understanding of the world around them. |
| Drama 7, 8, 9 ($10 Course Fee) CASTING CALL! Do you have a passion for the theatre? Are you looking to express your creativity or build communication skills and self confidence? Do you love to perform? You'll be in good company if you sign up for Drama - no audition required! This highly interactive course is designed to help improve your skills in and understanding of six key areas of study: orientation, movement, speech, improvisation/acting, theatre studies, and technical theatre. In this course, you will participate in improv and team-building activities, read and write scripts, create and develop characters, voices, costumes, and props, and work and perform both individually and as part of an ensemble, all while developing an appreciation for drama and the theatre. | Foods 7, 8, 9 ($60 Course Fee) Foods class inspires students to explore their culinary interests and build practical kitchen skills through engaging, hands-on activities. The course emphasizes kitchen safety, foundational cooking techniques, and teamwork. Its primary goal is to foster independence in the kitchen and introduce students to the wide range of career opportunities in the culinary field. Throughout the term, students will dive into hands-on cooking experiences, starting with preparing delicious and nutritious breakfasts. As the course progresses, they will explore creative lunch ideas, learn to make small dinners, and finish with a variety of tasty desserts. This class is designed to build practical kitchen skills and confidence while encouraging students to enjoy the art of cooking. |
| French Language & Culture 7, 8, 9 ($10 Course Fee) Bienvenue au cours de français! In this full-year course, students are introduced to the fundamentals of the French language (comprehension, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary). Students participate in a wide range of activities to practice reading, writing and speaking with emphasis on ‘real-world’ applications. Since language is embedded in culture, students will also acquire cultural knowledge about various Francophone peoples in order to gain a better understanding and respect for cultural and linguistic diversity. (Full Year) | Instrumental Music 7, 8, 9 ($60 Course Fee) The concert band is a large acoustic ensemble, like a symphony orchestra without strings. In delivering a music education program, this ensemble offers a variety of musical instruments for students. At Father Michael Mireau, our program’s goals are to (1) develop creative, technical, aural, and theoretical skills on wind & percussion instruments; (2) develop interpersonal skills required for effective ensemble sound and performance; and (3) establish the foundations of an enriched life resulting from the process of collective music making. In this program students also have the opportunity to participate in various field trips such as Band Share Day at the Winspear Centre, or our overnight music workshop at Camp Nakamun. (Full Year) |
| Maker Space 7, 8, 9 ($20 Course Fee) In this hands-on course, you'll explore 3D printing, electronics, and get to use cool tools like vinyl cutters. Work collaboratively to design and build projects that solve real-world problems. This class is perfect for curious minds ready to learn by doing and gain valuable skills in design, engineering, and technology. Get ready to get creative, take chances, and critically analyze your work! No experience is needed. | Recreational Leadership 7, 8, 9 ($20 Course Fee) The Recreational Leadership course is designed for students that have a prospective interest in areas such as physical education, community recreation, fitness, scorekeeping/refereeing, and coaching. |
| Environmental Outdoor Education 7, 8, 9 ($30Course Fee) This course is a mix of Outdoor Education and Environmental Stewardship. Learn about the natural world and how to care for and protect our environment. Take on a student planned and led sustainability project while enjoying leisure time outdoors and activities such as hiking, team sports, and field trips. | Film Studies 7, 8, 9 ($10 Course Fee) Film Studies is an exciting and unique option for students to learn how to see movies in a new light. In this class students will learn how to view movies with a critical eye and identify important elements that make up a visual narrative, such as plot elements and character progression. Students will also learn about the technical aspects of film, such as framing, camera angles, lighting, and focus, and how these elements add greater context and meaning. By the end of this class, students will be able to analyze how all these elements work together to create a compelling visual narrative. |
| Cosmetology 7, 8, 9 ($30 Course Fee) Cosmetology is the art and science of beautifying and improving the skin, nails, hair and the study of cosmetics and their application. The course will allow students the opportunity to learn skin care, hairstyling, nail care, make up and more. They will explore these techniques largely through a hands-on approach trying these new skills on themselves, mannequins, and other students. Students will participate in field trips and will have guest speakers to help them learn about how to properly care for their skin, nails, and hair. | Wellness 360 7,8, 9 ($10 Course Fee) Did you know that there is more to being healthy and being active than running laps or playing on a sports team? In this class, we will explore various forms of movement, several ways to be physically active, and focus on how all aspects of physical and mental wellness can help us to become the best version of ourselves. We will focus on wellness aspects such as fitness form, the benefits of dynamic stretching and movement, nutrition and sleep habits, stress management and explore new hobbies. In Wellness 360, we will move our bodies with purpose instead of competition. Get ready to have fun while we get active, de-stress, and become our best selves! |
